Doubt that Winston Peters can make a political comeback is becoming a chorus.

The New Zealand First leader has given his first interview, after a six month post-election silence on TVNZ's Q A programme on Sunday.

He went on the attack, claiming that National is going down a separatist path with the Foreshore and Seabed review.

But Political columnist Jane Clifton doubts there's an opening for Peters.

She says the public is much more relaxed about the Seabed and Foreshore issue this time around, as there's a lot more trust.

Clifton doesn't think Winston Peters trying to rile people up about it, will work.

She says last time this issue arose, people said Maori were going to chase people off the beaches.

She says that never happened, and it's generally accepted it never will happen.

Political commentator Graeme Hunt also doubts Peters has chosen the right issue if he plans to make a comeback.

Hunt says both sides of the argument have moved on, and Winston Peters is trying to make mischief with the issue, but the legislation served nobody's interest.

But he adds it did lead to the creation of the Maori Party and the demise of Peters.

He says it will take more than an attack on the foreshore and seabed review for Peters to make a comeback.
