The Nelson and Tasman District Councils are a step closer to amalgamation.
A petition in favour of joining the two groups has attracted 7000 signatures.
This means the local body commissioner is now bound to consider the amalgamation proposal and the logistics of such a move.
Councillors who support the joint initiative say it will save money and encourage faster decision making.
