Michael Cullen, one of New Zealand's longest serving MPs is expected on Tuesday to announce his retirement from politics.

The former deputy prime minister and minister of finance is said to be calling an end to his 27 years as a Member of Parliament.

However he won't be stepping to far from the spotlight. The government is expected to offer Cullen a job with a State Owned Enterprise.

He is set to reveal his future plans at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon.

Cullen is a list MP and his retirement means Labour will get two new MPs following on from Helen Clark's recent move to the United Nations.
