John Banks is urging John Tamihere to stand for the new Auckland super city.

It follows reports Tamihere has sounded out Banks on becoming his deputy on the Greater Auckland Council, should Banks become mayor.

Banks says he is willing to work with anyone who shares his vision for Auckland, but will not be making any arrangements for the role of deputy, or any other, before the first of November.

Banks adds he always wanted a credible Maori candidate to put their hand up, so hopes Tamihere does stand for the council.
