TV ONE LAUNCHES SATURDAY EDITION OF BREAKFAST

TV ONE will launch a new Saturday edition of its Breakfast programme, co-presented by Rawdon Christie and Toni Street, on 3 September.

Anthony Flannery, TVNZ's Head of News and Current Affairs, says: "Expanding Breakfast's schedule to Saturdays is an exciting development, which we know viewers will welcome."

The Saturday show will be an extension of the regular Monday to Friday Breakfast format, featuring the very latest news, sports and weather information, he says.

"Underpinned by a strong news focus, the show will also cover lifestyle, entertainment and sports - topics of special interest after the working week is over. It will be a great start to the weekend for viewers, before they get on with their shopping or kids' sport."

Rawdon Christie and Toni Street already have a strong association with Breakfast as regular back-up presenters for the weekday show.

Says Anthony Flannery: "Rawdon is a polished, highly professional and very credible presenter with a strong journalistic background.

"Likewise, Toni's an outstanding journalist and a talented broadcaster. She's known and respected for her professionalism, energy and engaging personality."

Breakfast is experiencing a growth in share against TV ONEs target demographic AP25-54, increasing 13% from May to July this year. Extending the programme to include a Saturday edition gives advertisers further opportunities to be involved with a respected, credible current affairs programme.

Broadcast 7-9am each Saturday, the weekend edition of Breakfast will replace the Best of Breakfast highlights programme that currently airs on Saturday mornings.

TVNZ WINS MEDIA BRAND OF THE YEAR

TVNZ won the prestigious 'Media Brand of the Year' award at the 2011 CAANZ Media Awards last week.

TVNZ's winning entry focussed on innovation - with TVNZ moving from a 2 commercial channel proposition to a true digital media offering, introducing market firsts in the Ondemand environment such as Ad on Pause and Ad Selector and partnering with clients to bring innovative solutions to our multiple screens.

TVNZ CEO, Rick Ellis says, the award endorses TVNZ's position as the leading player in the New Zealand media market. "To be judged best of the best by our peers is an outstanding achievement.

"The award reflects TVNZ's strategic objective to 'Inspire New Zealanders on Every Screen' reaching more New Zealanders in more meaningful ways. The past four years has seen TVNZ evolve from a standard definition two channel television network, into a television and digital media company.

"By ensuring innovation is at the forefront of our business strategy, and by keeping the consumer and customer as our top priorities, TVNZ has managed to achieve growth, and change the way agencies and clients interact with us.

"That breadth of connection with New Zealanders, across platform, across day part and in a range of entertainment and information environments enables TVNZ to offer greater value to customers and clients than ever before."

EWE WINS

U asked the most creative people they know to come up with an innovative way to brand the U logo on something they owned.

The agencies stepped up and as you can see from the entries there are some interesting ideas on how the orange U can be used.  From tagging walls, laptops and even animals, agency reps have given us some great entries and despite what it may sound like, we can guarantee no animals were harmed in the making of these photos.

1.4 MILLION KIWIS TUNE INTO U

TVNZ U has reached 1,392,400 viewers, according to cumulative figures released today by Nielsen for the four weeks ending Saturday May 14th.

That's a massive 34% of Kiwis who have engaged with New Zealand's only locally programmed youth channel over the past 4 weeks.
Surpassing all expectations, this is an exceptionally strong launch placing TVNZ U ahead of established competitor brands MTV and E! which achieved cumulative audiences of 1.003m and 1.106m respectively over the same time period. The first release of U cume numbers are the largest first release numbers seen outside of the 5 main FTA's.

TELEVISION TAKES A BIGGER SLICE OF THE ADVERTISING PIE

Television grew its share of advertising revenue by 2% in 2010 proving that more advertisers are seeing the value of this powerful medium in reaching New Zealanders.

In a release by the Advertising Standards Authority today, television ad spend increased by $37 million to $607 million in 2010.

As the advertising industry emerges from the recession to post a strong growth of 4% YOY, TV and Online are the big winners with TV increasing its share of total media spend for the first time in 7 years. And Online is now the third biggest media in New Zealand.  All other media (except cinema) either lost market share or remained stagnant.

Paul Maher, TVNZ Head of Sales & Marketing says, "The results are very pleasing although not altogether surprising. I think the growth we've seen this year in TV reflects the fact that in tough times advertisers look for the media channels that drive results and offer the greatest efficiency. TV audiences are at an all-time high driving reach, rating and results."

"The growth in digital is also not a surprise, what we're seeing reflects the strength of visual or 'screen' media. We have experienced this growth as customers look to leverage video across our screen assets."

OMD AND TVNZ TAKE NO BREAKS IN DIGITAL CREATIVITY

OMD Auckland, in collaboration with TVNZ, has developed a world-first use of digital media for Primo, a brand under the Fonterra umbrella.  Using TVNZs increasingly popular TVNZ Ondemand, the first ever Ad on Pause experience for consumers was created.  The Ad on Pause concept delivered a unique experience, whereby whenever a viewer paused while watching a show on TVNZ Ondemand, a Primo bubble floated out of the screen, telling consumers to Take A Moment and Chill. The strategy was to reach people at the time when they would usually consume Primo, that often being when they are taking a break from life.

TREND IN ONLINE ADVERTISING GROWING

Recently the IAB survey results came out with some interesting insights into growth in the online arena.  The results show this is a continuing trend.  88% of New Zealanders (10+) now have access to the internet, and 67% of those people access the internet via a broadband connection.  Added to this, we are now seeing more New Zealanders online in a week than reading a daily paper - in fact, when we look at Females 25-54 there are more of them online in a week than listening to the radio or reading a daily paper.  The growth of online as a media has been reflected in changes to advertising share, with Interactive increasing from 8.3% to 10.5% in 2009.   Over the same period TV share remained steady showing little signs of cannibalisation, while newspaper share is in decline (dropping from 32.8% in 2008 to 30.5% in 2009).
