The History of TV in NZ
On June 1 1960, the NZBC (now TVNZ) launched Channel 2 in Auckland with two hours per night, two nights per week of black and white TV. Now&years later, there are 98 TV channels in NZ, full regional breaks are offered on TV ONE, and TVNZ's digital channels are broadcast on Sky TV's digital platform as well as Freeview.

The Changing Home Environment
It's no secret that the television and digital media industry is growing and changing rapidly, thanks to the rise of new technologies. IPTV, Peer-to-Peer Networks, VOD, mobile TV, online networks and the flexibility of HD based recording on TV set-top boxes are giving people yet more ways to watch the TV programmes they love, which in turn, presents massive opportunities to advertisers.
But keeping your finger on the pulse is pretty hard. In this area of our website we'll endeavour to keep you up to date with the latest technologies plus some insight as to what it all means for advertising.

Freeview is New Zealand's free-to-air digital television and
radio platform bringing New Zealanders their favourite programmes
in digital quality for free.
Digital television is available around the world and Freeview is
here to ensure all New Zealanders have the opportunity to
experience it.
Freeview was introduced to:
- try and preserve audience share for free-to-air broadcasters,
- to provide consumers with a choice for digital broadcasting
- to support progress towards Digital Switch Over (DSO)
Freeview was established by New Zealand's leading broadcasters including TVNZ, TVWorks (owners of TV3 and C4), Maori Television Service, and Radio New Zealand to bring New Zealanders a range of digital TV and radio channels with no monthly subscription.
