Champion Cambridge Stud sire Zabeel has an excellent chance of clocking up his fifth Auckland Cup winner with three strong representatives in the $1 million staying event at Ellerslie on Wednesday.
Zabeel's previous winners of the time-honoured Group 1 3200m event have been Jezabeel (1998), Able Master (2000), Our Unicorn (2001) and Bazelle (2005).
Zabeel's runners this year are Australian visitor Zavite, Group 2 winner Six O'Clock News and South Island-trained Zabene.
Zavite and Six O'Clock News are among the favourites on the New Zealand TAB's fixed odds market for Wednesday's race.
Last year's Adelaide Cup winner Zavite, trained by Anthony Cummings, arrived in New Zealand last week and comes off the back of an impressive win in the Moonee Valley Night Cup at Moonee Valley last Saturday week.
The tough front-running stayer will be ridden by leading Australian jockey Damien Oliver.
Trent Busuttin-trained five-year-old Six O'Clock News is a past winner of the City Of Auckland Cup and has an impressive career record on the Ellerslie course. He has been placed in each of his three runs this campaign and appears to be peaking at exactly the right time.
Mark Walker-trained gelding Zabene is regally bred being by Zabeel from multiple Group 1 winner Emerald Dream. He boasts two wins in his current campaign.
