A number of top men players including defending champion Matt Gallop and world champion Gary Lawson have exited the New Zealand Open bowls tournament at Auckland.

Eastbourne's Gallop missed out on the quarterfinals after losing 9-21 to Pakuranga's Neil Fisher in the third round.

Lawson departed for the second year in a row in the first round when he was beaten 16-21 by Eastbourne clubmate Justin Goodwin.

He was joined on the sidelines after the third round by New Zealand team members Mark Watt who lost 14-21 to Putaruru's Kevin Robinson, Andrew Todd who was beaten 8-21 by Browns Bay's Colin Rogan 21-8 and Ali Forsyth, a 14-21 victim of St Clair's Ross Brown.

Fellow international Shannon McIlroy bowed out in the first round, losing 17-21 to Putaruru's Kevin B Robinson.

The only New Zealand national team player left in the singles is Richard Girvan, who made the semifinals after a lengthy battle with Carlton Cornwall's Wally Marsic.

Auckland's Neil Fisher and Elmwood's Alvin Gardiner are also through to the semifinals while Rogan and Australia's Lee Schraner were to play off for the final semifinal spot later on Monday.
