Trans-Tasman battle in wheelchair rugby final

New Zealand and Australia will meet in Sunday's final of the Asia-Oceania wheelchair rugby tourmanent at Christchurch.

Australia, the top seeds, will have the psychological advantage after beating New Zealand 45-44 in a hard-fought preliminary round match on Saturday morning.

The defeat saw New Zealand face a tough semifinal in the afternoon against third seeded Japan.

An improved second half after leading 25-24 at halftime saw New Zealand cruise home to a 51-45 win over Japan.

Australia beat Korea 62-41 in the other semifinal.

In the other preliminary round match played on Saturday, Japan beat Korea 67-43.
