Tennessee Titans' 86-year-old owner Bud Adams was fined $US250,000 by the NFL after making an obscene gesture following his team's 41-17 win over the Buffalo Bills.
A league spokesman said the fine was for "conduct detrimental to the NFL".
Prior to the announcement of the fine, Adams had apologised for his actions which were captured in video and accessible on the internet.
Footage showed Adams standing at the front of his executive box gesturing towards the field.
"I need to apologise for my actions yesterday near the end of the game. I got caught up in the excitement of a great day but I do realize that those types of things shouldn't happen," Adams said in a statement on the Titans' website.
"I need to specifically apologise to the Bills, their fans, our fans and the NFL. I obviously have a great deal of respect for (Bills owner) Ralph Wilson and the history we have shared.
"I also understand there will be league discipline for my actions and I will accept those," he added.
Adams and Wilson, 91, were two of the original owners in the AFL in 1960 with both their franchises entering the NFL in 1970.
