An emotional LaDainian Tomlinson bid farewell to the San Diego Chargers on Thursday, just days after being released by the NFL franchise.

Fronting a press conference, the 30-year-old running back teared up while saying his farewells to a club he has been a part of for nine years.

Tomlinson said he wasn't given a reason for his release but it had been widely tipped to be due to the US$5 million in total salary he would have been due to earn this season.

Tomlinson wants to keep playing and believes he has at least three or four more seasons left in the tank.

He departs as the Chargers' all-time leading rusher with 12,490 yards.
