Olympic bronze medallist Marc Ryan will wear the leader's yellow jersey heading into stage two of cycling's Tour of Southland.

Ryan's Colour Plus team won the opening stage, an eight point three kilometre team time trial in Invercargill on Monday.

Colour Plus finished the course in just 10 minutes and 10 seconds, 12 seconds ahead of Subway-Avanti.

Ryan says it was the luck of the draw who won the yellow and he was the lucky one as his name was pulled out of the hat.

Gordon McCauley's Subway-Avanti team was 12 seconds back in second, with American team Bissell-Pro a further three seconds back in third.

The 82 kilometre second stage from Invercargill to Bluff Hill will also be ridden on Monday.
