Rank outsider Vosne Romanee caused a major upset in winning the $1.2 million Kelt Capital Stakes (2040m) at Hastings on Saturday.
Ridden by apprentice jockey Buddy Lammas, Vosne Romanee scored at the huge odds of better than 54-to-one. He was dominant at the finishing line from Ginga Dude while the Australian visitor Miss Maren was a game third. The trifecta dividend paid more than $13,437.50.
Vosne Romanee is trained at Awapuni by Jeff Lynds who has prepared many top gallopers during a long training career.
The Electronic Zone gelding is owned by Ian and Alana Smart. He had finished unplaced in two previous outings this season and had not won a race since May last year.
It was the first Group 1 riding success for Lammas.
Prince Kaapstad made the pace during the middle stages with Harris Tweed trailing but both of these runners soon faded in the home straight.
Hot favourite Daffodil could only manage fourth placing while super tough galloper Sir Slick finished fifth.
