Intriguing revelations are coming out of South Africa as interest in the gender test of 18-year-old 800 metres world champion Caster Semenya mounts.

Britain's Daily Telegraph says preliminary tests indicate elevated levels of the male hormone testosterone up to three times the normal for a female.

It has also been noted that the head coach of the South African team is Dr Ekkart Arbeit.

Arbeit once expressed regret for playing a part in the drug-tainted East German success of the 1970s and 1980s.

He was also once accused by female athlete Heidi Krieger of giving her so many anabolic steroids she was forced to undergo a sex-change and live the rest of her life as Andreas.

Medical tests on Semenya are ongoing, with the results not expected for several weeks.
