Bad weather has forced the cancellation of this morning's penultimate stage of the Tour of Southland, but the final afternoon stage is set to go ahead as planned.

Overnight hail and snow meant that road conditions for the Stage 7 - a 13km individual time trial around WInton - were deemed too dangerous for riding.

Following extensive checks of the course and consulation with weather forecasts, this afternoon's final stage from Winton back to Invercargill, is set to start at 1pm, as scheduled.

The only change to the original 87km route is the removal of the final three laps of Queens Park, with the race now finishing when riders first reach Gala Street, removing 12km off the stage.

As it stands, 19-year-old Josh Atkins is set to become the tour's youngest ever winner.

The PowerNet rider holds a 65-second advantage over Pure Black Racing's Tim Gudsell after yesterday's 167km stage to Gore.
