Miami Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington is expected to miss the rest of the NFL season with a torn shoulder capsule.

ESPN reported on Tuesday that he suffered the injury early in the third quarter of Monday's 23-13 loss to the San Diego Chargers when he was hit hard while throwing a pass.

NFL analyst Chris Mortensen said Pennington will look for a second opinion on the injury but will likely not return this year.

Pennington has already undergone two surgeries on the same shoulder and will now likely need a third.

Doubt is also brewing about whether the 33-year-old will be back next season with his Dolphins contract lapses after this season.

In his absence, 2008 second round draft pick Chad Henne will take over behind centre.

Taking over in the second half against the Chargers, Henne had 92 yards and an interception.

Miami are now 0-3 for the season and things aren't looking much better.

Pennington was drafted by the New York Jets in 2000 where he spent six seasons.
