Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Ochocinco is heartbroken by the sudden death of close friend and team-mate Chris Henry.
Henry, also a wide receiver for the Bengals, died on Friday (NZT) from head injuries he suffered in a fall from the back of a pickup truck.
Police said the 26-year-old was involved in a "domestic situation" with his fiancee and got into the bed of a pickup truck as she drove away.
Henry "came out" of the back of the vehicle while it was moving, suffering injuries that saw him never regain consciousness.
A choked-up Ochocinco spoke to ESPN on Friday just hours after learning Henry had passed away in hospital.
"Chris was a very good friend of mine, extremely close," he told ESPN with tears welling up in his eyes.
"It's sad to see that it's come to this point. I just talked to Chris Tuesday night, he called me to see how I was doing.
"We talked before every game and he would just say 'go out there and handle your business'."
Henry was drafted by Cincinnati in 2005 and despite possessing undeniable talent, has never become a superstar due to off-field problems.
The NFL has suspended him three times during his career following four separate arrests.
But Ochocinco said Henry had finally got his life together and was heading down the right track.
"He was doing everything right, he's been doing everything right.
"My grandmother always says you never really question the man upstairs on the decisions he makes, because he never makes mistakes. But I don't see how Chris was ready.
"He's going to be missed," Ochocinco said before breaking down.
