They once had Carl "Bootcamp" Meyer in their crew, but now a well-known New Zealand men's rowing pair has a new taskmaster.

Meyer and James Dallinger have opted out in post-Olympic year with head coach Dick Tonks taking over as mentor of Hamish Bond and Eric Murray.

Bond said while Meyer set high standards in training they are sure to be sustained because Tonks is keen on giving responsibility to the athletes, adding that there is "no cajoling".

Bond has only been in the boat nine of the last 12 weeks because the higher ribs on his right hand side suffered a stress fracture.

The New Zealand squad flies out for Europe next Friday.
