San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman vehemently denies harming his reality TV host girlfriend Tila Tequila.
Merriman was arrested on Monday after Tequila told police he had choked and restrained her from leaving his California home.
But the 25-year-old said in a statement that he was worried for the safety of Tila because she was drunk and insisted on driving.
He said ambulance staff called out to his house reported no injuries to Tequila, who is most famous for her TV show 'A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila'.
Tequila has signed a citizen's arrest warrant on Merriman charging him with battery and false imprisonment.
He said both claims were completely false.
Merriman made an appearance back at Chargers training on Tuesday a day after being released from jail.
Merriman was the Chargers' 12th draft pick in 2005, and had 39.5 sacks in his first three seasons.
He missed most of last season after having knee surgery.
