A lack of funding is stopping sailors Hamish Pepper and Craig Monk from competing in next year's Star Class World Championships in Rio de Janeiro.

The regatta was viewed as an important part of the pairs build-up to the 2012 London Olympics.

But Hamish Pepper said they have had to make a tough decision.

He said they can't afford to spend 60 or 70 thousand dollars to travel to one regatta so they have invested it in other areas.

Pepper said a strong plan is still in place as they will still manage to attend a number of regatta's in 2010.
