New Zealand's Kimberley Smith has finished second in the Marugame International Half marathon in Japan overnight.

The multiple New Zealand record holder was just seven seconds behind the reigning Olympic marathon champion Tiki Gelana from Ethiopia.

Smith has been training in Auckland for the past month and returns to her Providence, Rhode Island home to train for upcoming races.

In the men's race, Australian Collis Birmingham won, setting a new national half marathon record.
