New Zealand surfer Paige Hareb has dipped out of the Margaret River Pro world qualifying series at the quarterfinal stage in Western Australia.

Hareb narrowly missed a place in the top four when she was shaded by Tyler Wright. The Australian had a best two wave score of 15.24 compared to Hareb's 14.50.

Hareb, who ends the event fifth equal, earlier advanced to the quarters by finishing second to Australian Chelsea Hedges in their three-member heat as the field was reduced from 12.

Although the event does not count towards the ASP world tour title, it has attracted a high quality field because points still go towards the year-ending world rankings.

Hareb is currently in a seven-way share of ninth on the world tour after the opening round on the Gold Coast last week.

The second round will be held at Victoria's Bells Beach from March 30 to April 5.
