New Zealand's Paige Hareb exited the Roxy Pro surfing competition on the Gold Coast on Thursday after an early infraction in her heat provided disastrous against Australian Rebecca Woods.

Hareb illegally dropped in on Woods on the first wave of their 30-minute third round heat at Snapper Rocks, a move that ensured her final score would be downgraded.

Although the New Plymouth-based surfer took the lead with a polished ride part way through the heat, the judging panel determined her second scoring wave would be halved by 50 per cent.

Once Woods recorded a best wave of 8.43 points she improved to 14.83, meaning Hareb practically needed two perfect scores of 10 to pip the Australian with 15 -- a task that proved beyond her.

Hareb, in her second year of the 17-member elite women's nine-stop world tour, next competes in the second event at Bells Beach in Victoria, Australia, from March 30 to April 5.
