New York Giants star Plaxico Burress has been released from hospital with a gun shot wound after he accidentally shot himself in his right thigh on Friday - US media is reporting.

Fox Sports.com reported the Giants receiver was released from a NY City hospital on Saturday afternoon with several other media reporting the shooting took place in a nightclub.

It is still unclear how the injury will affect Burress' - who was ruled out of the side's weekend clash with the Washington Redskins because of a sore hamstring - return to the club, or what kind of action will be taken against the player.

The team said in a statement that Burress' health was of their most concern.

The spokesperson also said: "We have been in touch with N.F.L. security on this matter. At this point, we are attempting to gather all the facts surrounding this incident. This incident could become a matter for law enforcement officials, and because of that, we have no comment on any of the details."

The shooting is the latest incident in Burress' turbulent carer.

He was suspended from the team in October for missing a team meeting.

He was also involved in a sideline confrontation with Giants coach Tom Coughlin and has been fined multiple times.
