Flynn nominated for player of year

Women's Black Stick player, Gemma Flynn has been nominated by the International Hockey Federation for the 2009 Women's Young Player of the Year.

Gemma is joined by five other international players for the nomination that acknowledges those women born 1986 or later.

Gemma was part of the Black Sticks Women's side who successfully won both the Oceania Cup in Invercargill, NZ (August 2009) and the Champions Challenge in Cape Town, South Africa (October 2009).

The FIH has also released the nominated players for the 2009 Women's Player of the Year, which includes six nominations also. All athletes that participated at the Samsung Champions Trophy and the BDO Champions Challenge I were able to vote.

Out of the votes received, the FIH established a short list. The winner of the Awards will come out of this selection. The winners will be announced during the ABN AMRO Champions Trophy in Melbourne, Australia. The nominees for the Men's Player of the Year and the Young Player of the Year will be released early December 2009.

Last year, Luciana Aymar (ARG) won the Women's Player of the Year Award for the fifth time in her career. Pol Amat from Spain was crowned Men's Player of the Year in 2008.

The nominees are for the Women's Young Player of the Year 2009 are: Casey Eastham (AUS), Gemma Flynn (NZL), Susie Gilbert (ENG), Emilie Mol (NED), Miyuki Nakagawa (JPN) and Josefina Sruoga (ARG).

The nominees for the Women's Player of the Year 2009 are: Naomi van As (NED), Luciana Aymar (ARG), Madonna Blyth (AUS), Baorong Fu (CHN), Natascha Keller (GER) and Helen Richardson (ENG)
