New Zealand's paddlers at the world canoeing championships in
Nova Scotia have all progressed through to the semi-finals after
the first day of competition overnight.
Beijing Olympian Steve Ferguson looked comfortable in taking second
in his heat of the K1 1000m, clocking three minutes 34.116 seconds
behind Rene Holten Poulsen of Denmark.
Ferguson followed that up with a third-placed 1min 47.267sec in the
fourth heat of the K1 500m, headed home by Russian Anton Ryahov and
sprint specialist Ronald Rauhe of Germany.
Beijing Olympian Erin Taylor was third in her heat of the K1 1000m
with 4min 25.709sec, the race won by Olympic doubles gold medallist
Katalin Kovacs in 4min 22.793sec.
Taylor also took third in her K1 500m heat, clocking 2min
05.741.
In the men's K2 1000m heats, Scott Bicknell and Troy Burbidge
finished second in 3min 23.418sec then fifth in the K2 500m, both
results good enough to see them through to the semifinals.
Lisa Carrington and Teneale Hatton also went through, with
fifth-placed finishes in both the K2 1000m and K2 500m.
