The national bowls fours men's and women's titles are up grabs in Wellington after the tournament favourites were ousted before the quarter-finals on Thursday.
Hong Kong Classic pairs champion Andrew Kelly and his team of Lance Pascoe, Nick Buttar and Dave Good put paid to the hopes of the Gary Lawson-skipped team of Ryan Bester, Danny Delany and Kelvin Scott, defeating them 18-13 in the second round of post-section play.
Defending champions Peter Belliss, Kevin Robinson, Steva Posa and Justin Goodwin have not been troubled along their way to the last 16, but now face the talented combination of Australia-based Black Jacks Richard Girvan, Ali Forsyth, Sean O'Neill and Andrew Todd.
Also going strong and through to the last 16 is the Dwayne Cameron-skipped team of Shannon McIlroy, Iain Dalton and Paul Anderson, who have cruised through the first two rounds of post section beating Kapiti's Arnold Osborne 22-7 and Wilton's Ben King 20-9.
Earlier, King put stop to Rob Ashton's four of Ken Walker, Richard Corry and Ray Boffa 16-14.
Terry Scott's combination of Shayne Sincock, Jim Scott and Mark Watt defeated formed New Zealand champion George Benvenuti in the first round of post section 18-15, but met their match in the form of former under-25 representative Blake Signal, going down 20-14.
A further shock exit came when the quartet of Phillip Skoglund, Ryan Khan, Phil Skoglund and Raymond Skoglund lost to Hutt's Kerry Geertson 18-14.
In the women's discipline, hot favourites Karen Coombe, Helen King, Clare McCaul and Genevieve Baildon took a shock exit in round two of post-section to Lower Hutt's Shirley Wilson by one solitary shot 17-16.
Frankton Junction's Sue Burnand and her team of Mandy and Angela Boyd joined by Leanne Curry are also in the title race after easing their way through to a quarter-final berth, beating Mangere's Emma Waerehu 20-14 and Annette Piper (Waikanae Beach) 21-16.
They now play the United four consisting of Barbara McGregor, double world champion Val Smith, Dianne Potts and Dale Bourke.
