Captain Morgan has made an enemy with the NFL after encouraging players to strike a pose during touchdown celebrations.

In an ingenious advertising scheme, the well-known rum company offered to donate $US10,000 to charity every time an NFL player struck the trademark 'Captain Morgan pose.'

Last week Philadelphia Eagles tight-end Brent Celek mimicked the brand's pirate pose after scoring a touchdown.

But the NFL were not impressed, quickly condemning the campaign, saying they would not allow "ambush marketing."

The reaction is largely fuelled by the fact that the NFL already has several high-paying sponsors in the alcohol industry who would be unimpressed with their rival's free plug.

The Captain has since released a statement responding to the decision to ban him recruiting players.

"Captain Morgan here, as you know I believe in celebrating legendary times with my fans and my friends and always doing so in a socially responsible manner. I am a man of action, a man of the moment, and I always make fun a priority.

"And when it comes to football what is more fun than a touchdown? I believe in drinking responsibly, marketing responsibly and helping charities too, but understand my friends at the NFL's perspective.

"I will continue in my quest for legendary times and ask my fans to do the same."
