Yesterday's earthquake has taken a devastating toll on the home of Canterbury hockey.

Playing turfs and surrounding buildings at Porritt Park in Christchurch have been severely damaged by the 7.1 magnitude earthquake which struck at 4:35am yesterday.

Huge sink holes have emerged on the playing surface while the entire site has become warped and uneven with fissures opening up in the earth.

Spotlights surrounding the turfs have moved while the clubhouse will need to be assessed for structural damage.

All hockey has been cancelled indefinitely.

The Black Sticks men were due to play the Canterbury Cavaliers yesterday and today in warm-up games ahead of the Commonwealth Games.
