A disappointed Moss Burmester has missed out on making the final in the 200m butterfly on the third day of the FINA World Championships in Rome.

Burmester, 24, finished sixth in his semi-final in 1:55.35, more than a second outside his Commonwealth record that he set at the trials earlier this year.

A bitterly disappointed Burmester had earlier cruised into the semi-finals after a controlled effort in his morning heat clocking 1:56.03, similar to his Olympic heat time, which was the 11th fastest time.

He went out strongly in his semi-final to be in second place after the first 50m but was overtaken by swimmers in the middle of the pool, unable to pick up the pace in the back half of the race.

Japan's Matsuda Takeshi was the fastest qualifier, winning the first semi-final from Beijing champion Michael Phelps with five swimmers from Burmester's second semi-final qualifying for Thursday's final.

Earlier a New Zealand record was not quite enough for Glenn Snyders to qualify for the semi-finals in the 50m breaststroke.

The International Training Centre swimmer, coached by Ansorg, took 2/10ths of a second off his own national record set in the trials, bringing the mark down to 27.72.

It was the 28th fastest time from the 154 swimmers who qualified for the championships with Snyders 3/10ths of a second off the final qualifying spot.

"That has given me some confidence to get a good swim under my belt," Snyders said.

"I was upset after the 100m and now this shows I have the speed and I am excited looking forward to the 200m and I have another chance to get the 100m right in the medley relay."

Snyders said the frenzy over the "shiny" swim suits had caught him out for his first day 100m breaststroke.

"I had opted for one of the suits to give myself a better chance but found it too restrictive. So I opted for the pants only but as soon as I dived in it they started to fill up with water. I took nearly four more strokes coming home.

"I've gone back to my Speedo suit and felt much more comfortable. It was a mistake for sure and I will learn from it."

Snyders will now set himself for the 200m breaststroke, hoping to repeat his performance from Beijing where he qualified for the semi-finalist.

There are no New Zealanders in action on Thursday, with three swimmers competing on Friday with Hayley Palmer in heats of the 100m freestyle, Kurt Bassett in the 200m backstroke and Snyders in the 200m breaststroke.
