Quarterback Drew Brees knows a Super Bowl victory for the Saints would be the mother of all feel-good stories for New Orleans.

The city of New Orleans, still recovering from the effects of Hurricane Katrina, needs this championship more than any other team in the NFL.

In 42 years in the league the Saints have never won a Super Bowl but on Monday (NZT) they have the chance to make history.

If the Saints can defeat Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts, the streets of New Orleans will literally erupt in a state of euphoria.

At the Super Bowl week's first media day Brees spoke about what a championship would mean to his desperate city.

"We're playing for much more than a win, it's a Super Bowl for our city and fans and all they've been through over the past few years especially," he said.

"I have season ticket holders who have had season tickets for 42 years. For so many of them to have waited so long and been through so many tough times in order to get to this point. Not only them but what people have gone through in New Orleans post Katrina, it's so much more than a game to us."

Brees has been speaking to past Super Bowl winning quarterbacks as well as his head coach Sean Payton for tips ahead of the big showdown.

He knows his side will have to be more than prepared on both offence and defence against a clinical side.

Brees said the main thing he has been working on is never to become predictable, something the Colts defence will pounce on.

And come Monday afternoon, the world will be watching so see if the 'Who Dat Nation' can bring something positive to a city that has been waiting for so long.

"We have the opportunity to give them so much hope, lift their spirits and give them something they deserve.

"There's no organisation or city that deserves a championship more than New Orleans."

The Super Bowl takes place on Monday, February 8 (NZT).

For all those Kiwi NFL fans who will be stuck at work and can't watch the game, tvnz.co.nz's John Whiting will be live scoring the Super Bowl from 12.00pm that day.

ONE News at 6pm will also wrap up the action later that evening.
