The New Zealand men's hockey team has headed into camp ahead of thier five match series against Malaysia.

Senior players Ryan Archibald, Blair Hopping and Hayden Shaw return to the squad for the first time since the Olympics last year.

Shaw has been plying his trade in Europe and found the change of scenery beneficial.

He says he learnt a lot both off and on the field, with the break giving him a chance to experience Europe as well.

The first match of the series is on Sunday in Palmerston North, with the team building towards the Oceania Cup at the end of the month.
