One of the world's biggest and fastest Super Maxi yachts has entered this weekend's iconic Coastal Classic race.

The 30 metre Alfa Romeo is aiming for a record-breaking run from Auckland to Russell if the weather permits.

The Alfa Romeo, which is campaigned by ex-pat Kiwi Neville Crichton, has taken the honours in more than 140 races around the world and Crichton is very keen for a win.

"I would love to win it. Heaps. I've come back to New Zealand to spend a lot more time and it would be a nice way to come back but, hey, we don't underestimate the other 200 boats."

Those other boats include the brand new Georgia, sister-ship to Team New Zealand's successful TP-52, and the return of Split Enz who holds the race record from 1996.
