The 2008 AFL champion Hawthorn Hawks are embarking on an ambitious promotion of the sport in New Zealand.
The Hawks have unveiled a program in alliance with AFL New Zealand to promote the game nationwide while also looking to unearth top talent.
Hawks president Jeff Kennett says the program isn't just about his club as he also envisages a team being eventually established in New Zealand.
He says in the short term there's no possibility but he doesn't see any reason why there can't be a New Zealand team in the future.
Jeff Kennett expects other AFL teams to follow suit and set up their own programs in New Zealand.
