SETTLER FAMILY
The Smith Family, Christchurch

Father:  Lindsay Smith (44)
Mother:  Tarnia Smith (40)
Son:  Marshall Smith (21)
Son:  Matthew Smith (19)
Daughter: Nadia Smith (11)
Son:  Conrad Smith (9)

It was a milestone birthday that prompted Christchurch midwife Tarnia Smith to apply for a role on TV ONE's One Land.

"It was that whole turning 40 thing, proving I'm not over the hill!" she says. "I was looking for a challenge, something to push me out of my comfort zone".

Six weeks living in an 1850s settler house is most definitely out of Tarnia's comfort zone. She is a self-confessed "maggi packet soup girl" who doesn't like to cook, and hates having to pick up after her family who "drop their belongings all over the house, thinking I'm the cleaner!"

Tarnia and her husband Lindsay live in Christchurch with their four children Marshall (21), Matthew (19), Nadia (11) and Conrad (9). Tarnia is a busy and popular independent midwife, while Lindsay runs his own house removal business.

Lindsay is into cars, drag racing, and is a self-confessed "Holden lover and couch potato". He cannot imagine life without car racing and television. He says Tarnia is very definitely "the boss of the tribe".

Eldest son Marshall has recently left home and "flats with the boys". He is into cars, rugby league, good-looking girls and "going out", but still brings his washing home to Mum! Together with his younger brother Matthew they run their own labouring business.

The only daughter is 11-year-old Nadia, who Mum says can't live without her mobile phone, makeup and Hannah Montanna. Marshall says in the Smith house, it's "Nadia's way or the highway".

Youngest child Conrad is headstrong and outspoken, and loves to argue! He is into his playstation, skateboard and fighting with his sister over the TV remote.

All the family agree they wanted to take on the challenge of living in the 1850s for Tarnia, who turned 40 in January in style with a family party. The Smith family, along with two other families the Ririnuis and the Dalrymples, were chosen from nearly 500 applications for the series.
