New Zealand judo player Moira de Villiers has exited the London Olympics in the first round after losing to Germany's Kerstin Thiele.

Competing in the 70kg class, the 22-year-old de Villiers lost 0-1on yuko (accumulated penalties) to the German in the round of 32 today.

Both judoka were evenly matched, and despite the encouragement from her coach and partner Jason Koster in the final stages, she couldn't execute the decisive move to progress to the last 16.

De Villiers had been seeking a top-10 finish ahead of mounting a medal challenge in Rio in 2016.
