Just 0.06 seconds separated the men's 4x100m medley relay team from a place in swimming final at the London Olympics and an unwanted ninth place.

The team of Gareth Kean, Glenn Snyders, Andy McMillan and Carl O'Donnell were fifth fastest in their heat in a time of 3min 34.52sec.

Canada pipped them for the place in the final after swimming 3:34.46 in the earlier heat.

Kean put the team sixth after the backstroke leg, before Snyders' breaststroke effort lifted them to third, a position held by butterflier McMillan before O'Donnell brought them home.

United States were the fastest qualifiers in 3:32.65.

Freestyler Hayley Palmer earlier missed out on making the semi-finals of the 50m after posting the 23rd fastest time in Friday's heats.

Palmer covered the one lap of the pool at the Aquatics Centre in 25.47sec to finish second in Heat 7.

The fastest 16 swimmers qualified for the semi-finals and Palmer was 0.19s slower than the time she needed.

Newly-crowned Olympic 100m champion Ranomi Kromowidjojo was fastest qualifier in 24.51.
