One fan said "it was the best thing ever".
Beckham said: "I have kind of been popping my head in, surprising people, seeing their reactions and jumping in and taking pictures with them so it's been a good morning, it's been fun."
Beckham has been tipped to have a role in the London Games Opening Ceremonies on Friday, even though he was left off the British men's soccer team roster and he turned down the opportunity to carry the Olympic torch.
Despite being left out of Team GB's football squad, it seems Beckham still knows how to keep his fans in high spirits.
For some, including 12-year-old Christian Lewis and his mother Elaine, it was all just too much.
"He's his hero. He just popped out and you know, David Beckham just showed his face and said do you mind if I come into your picture.
"He started crying and it's made me start crying. It was amazing," Elaine said tearfully.
Also given the Beckham surprise treatment were Linda Holgate and her children Emily and George.
Holgate said: "It was unbelievable, fantastic, I am still shaking. Just so exciting."
The stunt was part of Adidas's Take the Stage campaign.
