What's coming up for Catherine?
Tandi Wright teases what's ahead for Catherine in Nothing Trivial.
Where are Catherine and Jules at the beginning of series
two?
They're giving it all they've got. They're trying to do
the right thing by Celeste, trying to be good parents and to be
good to each other. That's what I love about this show - no
one is a bad person, everyone is trying to do the right thing but
life is complicated and rarely turns out how you plan it.
How does Catherine and Celeste's relationship develop
during season 2?
Actually, they go through the fire. Celeste is going
through the mess of emerging adulthood, and she's not terribly
impressed with how Catherine deals with that. But Catherine just
wants to guard her cub and keep her safe. In the end they're
a bit battered and bruised, but probably closer.
Have you enjoyed working with Tim Balme and Manon
Blackman?
I couldn't want for a better family to play with. I
have known and worked with Tim for many years prior to this so we
have this very easy, jokey, shorthand. The relief of having a great
love interest to work with is insane. Manon is a complete
star. I know she's got a brilliant career ahead, because not only
can she sing, dance and is drop-dead gorgeous, but she's also sweet
and kind and clever and hard-working. This profession can knock you
around if you don't have your feet on the ground, but I know she's
going to be just fine. I look forward to watching her
ascendancy.
How does Catherine and Mac's relationship unfold during
series two?
Ah, now that would be telling! Clearly they have a
great connection and there's an attraction there, and that doesn't
go away just because you're trying to ignore it. But it's actually
harder for them to be friends, because it's dangerous for them. But
then they get frustrated because they're not as close as they were.
It's complicated - which is why it's such fun to play and also why
it's great drama.
What's the best piece of trivia you've picked up from
the show?
Debbie Newby Ward does the best monkey impressions I've
ever seen!
How have you enjoyed working with various directors and
crew members?
Can I just say how much I love NZ crews? I have nothing
but respect and admiration. They are fun, hard-working,
uncomplaining and bloody good at what they do. This has got
to be one of the happiest jobs I've ever worked on. We have a
new director every two episodes and each has their own strengths
and quirks, which I really love. It's nice to get a blast of
fresh energy from them.
