Stelios Yiakmis got his screen break as hearthrob doctor Johnny Marinovich on Shortland Street, a role he played for five years. The part Greek, part Kiwi actor has gone on to act on both sides of the Tasman, including hit show McLeod's Daughters, acclaimed 2006 movie Jindabyne, and Kiwi crime drama The Blue Rose. Stelios grew up in Queenstown and performed on stage for the first time when he was at Queenstown Primary School.
Queenstown Dish Recipe
This week on Neighbourhood, curator Stelios Yiakmis shares how important his Greek heriatge to him including his all time favourite dish the Greek Salad. Here is a recipe for any one keen to sample this delicious Greek staple for themselves.
Serves 4 as a side dish or double the portions for a main course
4 large vine tomatoes
½ a red onion
16 black olives (preferably Kalamata)
85g feta cheese
1 tsp dried oregano
4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1. Roughly chop the tomatoes into irregular wedges
2. Thinly slice the red onion
3. Peel and deseed the cucumber and then roughly chop into thick slices
4. Combine the olives with the chopped salad in a bowl and crumble the feta over in rustic chunks
5. Drizzle over the olive oil and sprinkle the dried oregano on top. Lightly season and toss.
This dish is great served with grilled meats or on its own with fresh crusty bread.
