Auckland Zoo's beloved elephant Kashin has been laid to rest.

The 40-year-old was euthanised on Monday night , after her physical and emotional state deteriorated at the weekend.

Zoo staff on Tuesday night buried Kashin in a private part of the zoo, where she used to walk with her keepers.

There are plans in the works for a public memorial service.
