A 10-year-old boy critically injured in a major car crash near Otaki is in a serious condition in hospital this morning.
He had surgery after being airlifted to Wellington Hospital yesterday following the three car collision on State Highway One at Marycrest, just south of Te Horo.
The crash happened at 11.15am as a car had pulled to the right hand side of the northbound lane before turning into a driveway.
However, a small truck failed to notice the car had stopped and collided with its rear, pushing the car into the southbound lane where it collided with another white car.
There were two adults and three children in the right-turning car, including the 10-year-old, and all were taken to hospital.
A seven-year-old girl also suffered spinal injuries, while the other occupants avoided life threatening injuries.
Detective Slade Sturmey of the Horowhenua police said there were two adult passengers in the white south-bound car and these people were treated at the scene and did not require further treatment.
He said initial indications are that alcohol was not involved, but said this can't be ruled out. Speed, road conditions and driver factors are still to be investigated.
