A young boy is in a critical condition in Wellington Hospital following a serious crash on State Highway One at Marycrest, just south of Te Horo.
The crash, involving three cars, happened about 11.15am today.
A white car northbound had stopped on SH1 and indicated it was turning right turn into a driveway, said Detective Slade Sturmey of the Horowhenua police.
The car was pulled as far right as possible in the northbound lane to allow vehicles to pass on its left.
However, a small truck failed to notice the car had stopped and collided with its rear, pushing the car into the southbound lane where it collided with another white car, Sturmey said.
There were two adults and three children in the right-turning car, and all were taken to hospital.
A 10-year-old boy was flown to Wellington by Westpac Rescue Helicopter with critical injuries and is undergoing surgery.
A seven-year-old girl has spinal injuries, while injuries to the remaining occupants are not currently known. However, it's understood that their injuries are not life threatening.
The two occupants of the truck were treated at the scene and required no further treatment
Detective Sturmey said there were two adult passengers in the white south-bound car and these people were treated at the scene and did not require further treatment.
He said initial indications are that alcohol was not involved, but said this can't be ruled out. Speed, road conditions and driver factors are still to be investigated.
There were significant traffic delays in the area north of Wellington, along with diversions, and police would like to thank people for their patience with this.
Two killed in seperate incidents
A 73-year-old man has been killed and another critically injured in a crash during a four wheel drive trek in the Ruakituri Valley, north of Wairoa.
The crash occurred on a farm on Mangaroa Road.
The man was the passenger in a vehicle which went out of control on a farm track, then proceeded to roll down a steep 25 metre bank.
Both occupants were thrown from the vehicle as it rolled.
Gisborne and Hawke's Bay rescue helicopters winched the two men from the scene, and flew them to Hawke's Bay Hospital.
One of the men died on the flight.
The other victim, also 73, is currently in intensive care.
Police and Department of Labour Investigators are at the scene continuing their enquiries.
Meanwhile, one person has been killed after a collision between a pedestrian and a car in Nelson this morning.
The incident happened at 3.42am, and the deceased was dead on arrival at Nelson Hospital.
In a separate incident a man with severe injuries was flown to Northland Base Hospital after an accident on SH 10 in Kaeo.
