A bible found in the World War One trenches by a British soldier has been traced back to a New Zealand soldier.
British soldier Herbert Hodgson, found the bible lying in the mud when he fell into a shell hole during an attack on the German lines at Messines Ridge in Belgium in 1918, The Dominion Post reported.
Using the internet and the army service number, the family of Hodgson traced the Bible to Private Richard Cook, of the Otago Regiment of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force.
Cook died of wounds in 1917, aged 26 and is buried in a French military Cemetery in France.
