Kiwi Rail hopes to have its Christchurch to Dunedin trunk line open again by Friday evening.
Contractors have been working to fix a badly damaged section of the line, after a freight train derailed on Wednesday night, near Palmerston in Otago.
Kiwi Rail spokesman Kevin Ramshaw says essentially the whole track needs to ripped up and replaced.
He says work at the site is likely to take all day and the line is likely to be opened again at 8pm on Friday.
Ramshaw is unsure of the cost to replace the track
