A woman has suffered serious injuries after being attacked inside her Dunedin home this morning.

Police report that the incident occurred at an address on Duncan St, City Rise, around 9am.

The woman suffered serious facial injuries, including stab wounds to her neck, in the attack.

Her three year-old daughter was also in the house but was unharmed in the incident.

Soon after the attack, the woman managed to leave the address with her daughter. A passing motorist took the woman to Dunedin Public Hospital, where she is now undergoing treatment.

Police hope to speak about the attack with the woman later today.

The man was not known to the woman. He is described as being European, around 6 feet tall with short hair and facial stubble.

He was wearing jeans and a black hoodie.

Police are undertaking a scene examination at the woman's address.
