Woman receives first drug driving charge

A 22-year-old Whakatane woman has the dubious distinction of being the first driver in the Bay of Plenty to be charged with driving under the influence of cannabis.

Tauranga police stopped the woman in Elisabeth Street early on Sunday, just an hour after the legislation took effect.

Police say she was was smoking cannabis while driving through the checkpoint and failed the compulsory impairment test.

She also supplied false details.

Police say as it turned out she was a suspended driver due to excessive demerit points.
