It has finally been revealed why police were so intent on finding an Asian woman who was seen with toddler Aisling Symes.
They continued to trace her even after the body of the two-year-old was found on Monday and the post-mortem revealed she had drowned.
The woman was identified as a person of interest in the inquiry from the beginning, with police saying they believed Aisling may have been the victim of an opportunistic abduction.
She failed to come forward despite an extensive search by police and repeated calls for information.
Police have revealed they spoke to the woman on Tuesday night and were satisfied she is unable to help them in any way. She has a history of mental illness and of trying to lure children into cars with lollies.
Aisling was farewelled in west Auckland on Friday.
