Woman drowns while out horse riding

A 38-year-old woman is dead after drowning in a swollen river in the lower North Island.

Police say she was out horse riding when she got into trouble in the Ruamahanga River just north of Masterton.

Witnesses tried to rescue the woman but were not successful.

The woman's name has not been released.
