Police say a woman who was attacked while walking near Massey University's Wellington campus last night was grabbed from behind and dragged.
The 27-year-old also had her mouth covered by the attacker but managed to scream and fight back.
Detective Sergeant Mark Scott of the Wellington CIB said she punched the man who then ran off.
She was not injured but was shaken.
The woman was walking along a public pathway near the intersection
of Rugby and Tasman Streets, which borders Wellington High School
and Massey University, at around 10pm.
The offender was described as a male Caucasian of medium height and build with light coloured, but not blonde hair. He was aged between 25 and 35 years old.
"If anyone saw a male fitting this description running off from the scene, we'd like to hear from you too," Scott said.
"The offender may also have some kind of injury to his face as a result of the victim fighting him off. This was a really scary attack which has left the victim shaken."
Police enquiries are continuing.
